Motorcycle Tour Through North East India


This is a 15 day tour that will take us through some very bad roads and high passes but the route is very interesting and with amazing visuals. Riding days will be long and tough sometimes and there will be a lot and lots of dust, some mud and slush too. The stay will be very good at places and then down to rudimentary. And in some places there will be no electricity and certainly no WiFi. Lunch will mostly be on some ‘Dhabas’ along the way and a couple of times, we will have “Packed!!” lunch from the village and will possibly eat near a stream or river.

We prefer the bikes to be of the offroad / dual purpose types as this is the terrain for them.

Chain Reaction India has been conducting tours through the interiors of North East India for the last 10 years. We try and involve the local community and the villagers in some way or the other….be it making traditional lunch for the way, cultural troupes showcasing some of their culture, engaging a local fisherman to fish and cook at the camps, contributing towards the upkeep of a village school etc etc…

We do not simply conduct “tours”…we sell “experiences” of which you will talk about…long after you go home.

Day 1 - Guwahati -Nameri -220km

Detailed Itinerary

Day 1 – Guwahati -Nameri -220km

We will start early and cross the Brahmaputra River and ride on to Nameri via Tezpur. We will ride on good straight roads almost all the way and face moderate traffic. We will stay at the Nameri Eco Camp.

Day 2 – Nameri – Dhirang – 165km

We will enter Arunachal Pradesh today. As soon as we cross Bhalukpong, the border town of Arunachal Pradesh, the topography changes. We will be riding on narrow hill roads with lush green forest on one side and a roaring river way b below on the other side. Since there is road construction going on, there will be slush and the going will be slow. We will stay at the Tourist Lodge at Dhirang.

Day 3- Dhirang – Sela Pass – Tawang – 145km

We will start early and hope to cross the 13,700 ftSela Pass as early as possible. There might be some snow on the pass and the going will be slow. There will be Army movement and taxis on the way but other than that there is very less traffic. The Sela Pass is the scene of some violent fighting during the Indo-China war. We will climb down to almost 10,000 ft to reach Tawang.

Day 4- Tawang – P.T.tsolake – Tawang - 65km

Take a look at the beautiful 400 years old Tawang Monastery, which is supposed to be the second largest Monastery after the Potala Palace in Tibet. HH the Dalai Lama took refuge in this Monastery when he fled Tibet. We ride up to see the beautiful P.T.Tsolake before returning to Tawang.

Day 5 – Tawang – Bomdila – 180km

We will be riding downhill, but the going will be slow because there will sure be some landslides along the way. We will stay at the Monastery Guest house at Bomdila. The going can be slow at times but the amazing topography will compensate for that.

Day 6 - Bomdila –Nameri – 120km

We will be staying over at the Nameri Eco Camp again.

Day 7 – Nameri – Kaziranga (130km)

You might want to go in for a beautiful Nature Walk at Nameri early morning and also drift down the river on a raft before lunch. We will leave for Kaziranga after launch. We will be reaching Kaziranga National Park in the afternoon. We will be staying at an Eco camp set in the middle of a small tea plantation. The huts are on stilts and are made of bamboo, straw, wood and mud. If we arrive too late for the afternoon Jeep safari, we will combine both the elephant and the jeep safari in the morning. Enjoy a night by the bonfire, ethnic Assamese food and a billion starts overhead.

Day 8 – Kaziranga – Jorhat (100 kms)

At the crack of dawn, you can go in for an elephant safari. The safari lasts for about 1 hour and you can see the animalsupclose. The morning jeep safari starts right after the elephant safari and lasts for about 2 hours. After breakfast, we will travel for 100 kms to the tea town of Jorhatand have lunch at a beautiful tea estate. We will halt at an old colonial era tea bungalow for the night.

Day 9 – Jorhat– Mon (200 kms approx.)

We will ride on good roads for most of the way except the last 45 kms. We will enter Nagaland and into the area of the headhunting warriors today. Since the ride will take most of the day, we will be reaching Mon late in the evening and stay at a hilltop accommodation.

Day 10 - Mon

Mon is the headquarters of the Konyak Naga, the most feared of all the warriors of the Naga tribes. We will travel about 45 kilometers today to a village called Lungwa which shares its borders with Myanmar. Lungwa seems to have been caught in a time warp. This village has the maximum numbers of tattooed headhunting warriors who are all on the wrong side of 50 and they will all be gone in a few years’ time. The Konyaks practiced headhunting in living memory. A warrior who could ‘collect’ a head of an enemy was decorated with tattoos in his face. The more heads he collected, the more intricate the tattoos grew and the more his esteem grew in the society. Since headhunting is a thing of the past, no one is tattooed anymore. Visit the Chief and interact with the warriors. The chief is not a rich man in terms of money but he wields immense power over the community. His house straddles the international border. Half of his house lies in Myanmar and the other half is in India. His jurisdiction runs over to 50 villages in Myanmar.

Day 11 – Mon –Mokokchung (180 kms)

Today we will be going offroad. We will take the dusty backroads to Mokokchung. This road passes through some small villages and coal mines and the roads have been destroyed by the coal trucks. You will hardly meet anyone on the way except for some small tea stalls and maybe some elephants engaged in logging. After a few hours, we will hit beautiful tarmac road right till Mokokchung. Lunch will be by the side of a river or stream and will consist of rice, boiled vegetables and meat cooked in the hollow of a bamboo. We will stay at a very decent tourist lodge.

Day 12 –Mokokchung – Kohima (180 kms)

We will start early and initially ride on some very well laid road and suddenly take a diversion that is completely offroad. We will hardly meet anyone for the next couple of hours and we will come across the beautiful Doyanglake. Snacks will be by the lakeside and then we will ride on some more bad roads till about lunchtime. After lunch, we will hit very good roads all the way to Kohima, the capital of Nagaland. Stay will be at high end hotel.

Day 13 Kohima

An easy day. Kohima is one of the two WW II theatres of t India…the other being Imphal. Some of the bloodiest battles were fought at Kohima…battles that changed the course of the World War II. We can visit the War Cemetery, the local market and some villages.

Day 14 –Kohima – Khonoma – Peren – Dimapur (150kms)

Well….another day of offroading. We will visit the historical village of Khonoma along the way. The people of this village had fought against the British army a century back and then against the invading Japanese army during WW II. The roads are bad but the views are awesome. We will stay at the outskirts of Dimapur to avoid the chaotic traffic.

Day 15 –Dimapur – Guwahati/ Nongpoh(300kms aprox)

The home run. We will take a backroad from Dimapur to Guwahati (or Nongpoh) The route has a few kilometers of broken tarmac as it winds through some gentle rolling hills and forests. As we get out of the forest, we will hit very good wide roads that will take us all the way to Guwahati (or if we decide to go to Nongpoh). Day 16 Transfer to airport. End of tour

Terms and conditions


1. Online Booking
A deposit of 30% of the total estimated bill is requiredto hold the booking on a confirm basis at least 90 days before the tour starts.

2. Security deposit
Required deposit: Rs. 10000/- per bike & one original ID proof. Refundable if there is no damage on the bike.

3. Cancellation and refunds
40% of the total estimated bill is refundable until 30 days before the tour starts. Above the stipulated time, 20% will be reimbursed.

4. Responsibility of the applicant
-The company is not responsible in case of physical or fatal injuries.

-The company is not responsible for the bikes damages. If the body, clutch plates or riding gears are damaged because of rough riding the applicant will be charged.

5. Trip extension
If unforeseen circumstances necessitate a trip extension or if the participants decide to extend the motorbike tour, additional costs will be charged to them.

6. Unexpected disruptions
Hardev Motors organizes guided motorcycle tours in some of the wildest areas on earth, accordingly the weather and environment can be unstable especially in the Himalayas.
Company is not responsible for changes in the itinerary or program  that are a result of roadblocks, landslides, monsoon, heavy rain or snow fall and any natural crisis.

7. Rights
HM Holds the rights to refuse/ remove you while on a tour In case of   not follow the rules of ride /command of team leader/Unacceptable behavior with other group members etc. No amount is refundable in that situation.

8. Conditions to participate in our rides
To participate as a rider an individual has to be equal or above the age of 18 years at the time of the tour and be in possession of a valid motorcycle driving license and international driving license (for foreigners), be in good health condition and have at least 2 or 3 years experience in riding a motorcycle.

As a pillion, an individual has to be equal or above the age of 12 years at the time of the tour, in good health condition and with at least some motorcycle co-riding experience.

9.Number of participants
A minimum of 6 riders is required to start a tour.
