Welcome to the first ever Motorbike Touring Company in Manali. We are proud to say that we were the pioneer of motorcycle adventure tours in Manali and on the famous highway to Leh (Ladakh), making us the co-authors of a new chapter in the History of extreme Motorbiking
BEFORE YOU DEPART
I´M NOT EXPERIENCED IN RIDING MOTORBIKES BUT I WANT TO JOIN YOUR TOUR – IS IT POSSIBLE?
Yes it is. You have the option to join the tour as a passenger in the back-up vehicle, which is quite an enjoyable alternative as you will still be able to enjoy the sceneries and with comfort in addition.
CAN I RIDE MY OWN MOTORCYCLE ON THE TOUR?
Hardev Motors doesn´t allow personal motorbikes on a tour. Our motorbikes are already customized, adjusted and tested by our mechanical team to show the best performance and reliability during the tour. A mechanical failure from a personal motorbike is likely to delay the tour to the detriment of the other members.
WHAT ARE THE CONDITIONS TO PARTICIPATE IN YOUR TOUR?
To participate as a rider an individual has to be equal or above the age of 18 years at the time of the tour and be in possession of a valid motorcycle driving license and international driving license (for foreigners), be in good health condition and have at least 2 or 3 years experience in riding a motorcycle. As a pillion, an individual has to be equal or above the age of 12 years at the time of the tour, in good health condition and with at least some motorcycle co-riding experience.
DO I NEED TO BE FIT TO PARTICIPATE IN YOUR TOUR?
If you practice at least a weekly physical activity then you shouldn´t encounter any particular problem. Motorbike tours in the Himalayas involves being at very high altitudes and Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS) can occur in few cases. People being in a good physical condition are likely to suffer less from that syndrome. Motorbiking in Rajasthan presents no such difficulties except the temperatures that can be very high in the Thar desert.
WHAT DOCUMENTS WILL I NEED IN A TOUR?
You will need your driving license and your passport. Foreigners will need their driving license, passport with valid tourist visa to India and are recommended to apply for a travel and health insurance.
CAN I JOIN THE TOUR AS A PILLION RIDER?
You can if you have a rider on our tour who agrees to take you as a pillion and handle the extra weight, especially in the Himalayas. This is actually easier on our guided tour since the luggage is carried by the back-up vehicle.
ARE THE ROYAL ENFIELDS SEATS COMFORTABLE FOR BOTH RIDER AND PILLION?
Most of our customers have found the seats comfortable enough. However, this is true that you can feel varying degrees of discomfort on the bumpy roads especially closed to the passes.
IF REQUIRED, CAN A PILLION TRAVEL IN THE BACK-UP VEHICLE DURING THE TOUR?
Yes, pillions or riders, if relayed, are welcome to use the back-up vehicle whenever they need as long as there are seats available and that it is done on a rotational basis with other members. However priority shall be given to a participant in emergency situations.
CAN MY FRIENDS OR FAMILY (NON-RIDERS) JOIN ME ON THE TOUR?
Yes, they can reserve a place on the tour as passengers in the back-up vehicle. However, we recommend you to book them well in advance in order to guarantee the availability of the seats.
CAN A PERSON NEW TO MOTORCYCLE RIDING PARTICIPATE IN YOUR TOURS?
We would prefer if you had at least 2 or 3 years of motorcycle riding experience. If you have less but feel confident enough in handling a 170kg bike, we will not restrict you.
DO I GET TIME TO FAMILIARIZE TO THE MOTORCYCLE?
At Hardev Motors, as soon as you reach our company, our support staff and team leader are there to introduced you to the bikes and take you for a ride around Manali during 2 or 3 hours in order to accustom you to our bikes, to the road conditions and also to the Indian road rules.
IS THERE ANY DIFFERENT IN RIDING A MOTORCYCLE IN INDIA AND IN WESTERN COUNTRIES?
Indian traffic is always on the left side. But this is not the only difference to most of the western countries. What might seem at the first sight completely chaotic and unorganized has certain rules that should be followed while riding. Besides, road conditions can vary consequently, especially in the higher Himalayas. Our team will teach you all what you should know during your familiarization ride.
HOW MUCH RISK IS INVOLVED?
Motorcycle riding is always accompanied with a potential risk, no matter which part of the world you are riding. In fact, when you go on an adventure activity, you are exposed to a certain amount of risk, especially in the Himalayas where the roads can be in very bad conditions. Our team is responsible for preparing you in the best possible way to any kind of situation. However you should always use your common sense and care for a good preparation.
ARE THERE ANY POSSIBILITIES OF THESE TOURS GETTING DISRUPTED?
Hardev Motors organizes guided motorcycle tours in some of the wildest areas on earth, accordingly the weather and environment can be unstable sometimes, especially in the Himalayan foothills. Landslides, moving glaciers, heavy rain or snow fall and others happen very frequently in the Himalayas and can lead to road blocks or accidents. Although we prepare for almost every contingency with utmost care, certain factors can cause “delays”, disruptions and possibly cancellations as well. Even though we eat and stay at hotels/camps most of the nights during the tour, we always carry high altitude camping gear, enough fuels, rations & provisions, just in case. Every morning your route captain will inform you about the conditions of the roads and will decide if a change in the programme is required.
WHAT IF THERE IS A MEDICAL EMERGENCY?
An adventure activity is always accompanied with a certain risk. We always carry during a tour a medical kit including oxygen cylinder and medicaments for common diseases and minor injuries. Besides, most of our team members have been trained in first aid and rescue. However, in case of serious injuries or health problem that requires some medical intervention, we´ll reach the nearest medical facility in the region.
DO I NEED MEDICAL OR TRAVEL INSURANCE?
We recommend you to take out a travel and health cancellation insurance at least for the duration of your tour with us. Make sure your insurance also covers you against cancellation charges, unexpected curtailment of the holiday, emergency evacuation expenses, medical expenses arising overseas, loss or damage to luggage & property.
WHAT ABOUT MOTORCYCLE INSURANCE?
If you have chosen to ride through the Himalayas, you have to expect a variable weather, from heavy rain to snow fall, storm or even heat, depending the period you´re traveling. In Rajasthan, only the heat can be an inconvenience.
WHAT KIND OF CLOTHES SHOULD I BRING?
If you´re riding through the Himalayas, think to bring waterproof and windproof clothes and enough pairs of clothes. However, try to travel as light as possible, only carry the necessary with you. Lighter is the bike, easier is the trip! For further details about what to bring you can visit “Short information” section on our website.
WHAT KIND OF RIDING & SAFETY GEARS DO I NEED?
First thing you have to think about for the trip is your protection equipment. A good riding jacket, lower, riding shoes, riding gloves and helmet are not to be neglected. Even if our company always provides a helmet with elbow and knee pads, we prefer participants to bring their own helmets for the tour. For the riding jacket and lower, you can rent them to our company. The Himalayan tours involve some challenging crossings, a good waterproof and windproof equipment will provide you the necessary protection and comfort along your trip.
DO I NEED TO BRING BIKE SADDLEBAGS OR PANNIERS?
No. We have a support vehicle that will carry your luggage and follow the riders not very far behind. However you can carry with you certain things in a small bag-pack that you will need regularly during the ride (snacks, camera, water, etc.).
WHO WILL BE MY TOUR GUIDE?
Mr Sonu Rajput will be your route captain and at the same time your tour guide. With a strong experience and perfect knowledge of the environment where you will be riding, he will lead you along the trip from the front on his motorcycle.
HOW MANY PARTICIPANTS CAN THERE BE IN A GROUP?
On our fixed departures, we prefer a minimum of 6 riders to start a tour and a maximum of 20 riders.
DO WE RIDE ON EVERY DAY OF THE TOUR?
All depend on the tours you´ve chosen. Some are more challenging than others. In a 10 days itinerary, this is generally a “one day one new destination” trip. In a 15 days or 12 days itinerary, you will have more opportunities for rest, relaxation and local sight-seeing. However, in the Himalayas, bad weather, road blockages or landslides can disrupt our original schedule and sometimes you will have to ride longer and harder that the original plan.
ARE ALL ITINERARIES “FIXED”?
When you´re riding in a country like India, nothing can be 100% “fixed”. As mentioned above, bad weather, route conditions, etc. can disrupt the pre-planned itinerary. Although we make every effort to stick to the original plan, keeping a flexible attitude is very important on such a tour.
HOW MUCH KM DO WE HAVE TO RIDE EVERY DAY?
On a Himalayan tour the average distance covered per “riding” day is between 100 to150 km. On a Rajasthan tour the average is around 150 to 200 km. These averages are based on the assumption that there are no disruptions to the original plan.
HOW FAST WILL WE BE RIDING?
On our tour, in view of the road conditions or traffic, we never exceed 60 km/h and strongly discourage anybody wanting to ride above this speed which would be dangerous either for himself and others. We travel respecting each rider´s pace in a friendship and cooperative spirit, taking into account a time for rest and exploration.
WHAT TYPE OF ACCOMMODATION WILL YOU PROVIDE?
You´ll be staying at some mid-range hotels that we carefully selected during our expeditions. On a Rajasthan tour, some can be classified as “luxury”. However, on a Himalayan tour, where the options are quite limited, you´ll stay in basic accommodation. Although the type of accommodation can vary significantly, you can be assured that they are the best we´ve found in the area for a reasonable price. In some place, you may be staying in a comfortable guest house surrounded by a lush garden, in others, in a basic tented camp (Pangong Lake, Pang). The rooms we provide are twin-sharing rooms and always include an individual bathroom. If you don´t want to share a room, you may buy a single supplement.
WHERE DO THE TOURS “START” AND “END”?
It depends. On a Himalayan tour, some tours start and end in Manali and some start in Manali and end in Leh. On a Nepal tour, most of them start and end in Kathmandhu. On a Rajasthan tour, tours will start and end en Delhi.
WHEN/HOW SHOULD I BOOK MY TOUR?
To make sure that places are still available, we advise you to book it as soon as possible. You can start booking for a tour 12 months till 5 days from the departure date (if places are still available). Fill the form on our website www.hardevmotors.com or send us an e-mail specifying your opted dates and number of riders and pillions you are on firstname.lastname@example.org
IS ELECTRICITY AVAILABLE EVEN IN THE REMOTEST OF AREAS?
It is not guaranteed. In some places on the Himalayan tours there’s no power. Make sure to recharge all your electricals as soon as electricity is available like in the hotels and don´t forget a travel adaptator.
HOW LONG IS THE DURATION OF YOUR TOURS?
In our “fixed departures”, we have 3 options. A 10 days, 12 days or 15 days tour.
CAN YOU PROVIDE CUSTOMIZED OR PRIVATE GROUP TOURS?
Yes, according to your preferences, we can create and lead customized or private group tours. However, we advise you to plan it well in advance so your chosen dates do not clash with our fixed departures dates.
IS FOOD INCLUDED IN THE PRICE?
No, all the meals will have to be paid by you. On a tour, unexpected situations can happen accordingly we cannot be sure to meet your specific requirements in terms of meals and restaurants. However, we carry refreshments like small cans of juice, energy bars, chips & cookies in the back-up vehicles so that we can enjoy a short break wherever convenient for us.
CAN I BRING INDIAN CURRENCY TO INDIA?
No, bringing Indian currency from your country is not allowed. You must exchange the currency of your respective country in Indian Rupees (INR) in India. If you are carrying debit/credit cards, please note that ATM´s & other such facilities will only be available at major cities. Especially on the Himalayan tours, you are best advised to carry enough cash with you at least until the next major cities.
WHAT ABOUT “FACILITIES” ALONG THE ROADS?
In India, conveniences along the road like toilets facilities are almost non-existent or very few and level of hygiene can vary significantly from one to another, accordingly we advise you to carry hand sanitizer, wet napkins or everything you feel required to meet you hygienic needs. At most stops, you can relieve yourself in the bushes/wasteland/fields around the road (which is normal practice in India especially away from urban population). However, wherever possible, we make a stop at an “acceptable” restaurant where we´ll also have a cup of tea or coffee.
CAN I USE THE BIKE INDEPENDENTLY OF THE GROUP?
No, you can’t. We do the local sight-seeing on the bikes together and on the “rest days” our mechanics work on the bikes for general checking and maintenance.
HOW MUCH LUGGAGE CAN I BRING?
As the space in our back-up vehicle is limited, we advise you to keep your luggage as small as possible and in separated little bags, so that you can carry some with you in the carriers of the bikes, and put your delicate things in the back-up vehicle.
DOES “HARDEV MOTORS TOURS” ARRANGE AIRPORT TRANSFERS?
Yes, from Delhi or Leh, Hardev Motors can arrange airport transfers with minibus. Just inform us in advance.
DO I NEED RAIN GEAR?
Yes. Especially on a Himalayan Tour, weather can quickly change and rains can be violent and we can´t allow rain to spoil our trip so bring some good waterproof!
DO I NEED TO BRING A SLEEPING BAG?
No, it´s not necessary. On our tours, we provide you sleeping bags in case you didn´t bring your own.
DO I NEED GLOVES?
Yes, your riding gears wouldn´t be complete without good protective gloves. There are essential equipment for bikers and pillions.
DURING THE RIDE, CAN I STOP TO TAKE PICTURES WHENEVER I WANT?
We do not recommend. As the back-up vehicle with mechanic and spare parts stay or stop behind the last rider, it would be very difficult for the driver if he has to stop and wait for every rider wanting to take pictures. However, we always chose a picturesque location to every stop we make and our team leader also will stop when the place really offers breathtaking landscapes which are worth to take in picture!
HOW MUCH SPENDING MONEY WILL I NEED?
You will need money for all meals, all expenses of personal nature like laundry, internet, phone calls, entrance to monuments, tips. For a 2 week tour, USD 500 should be enough.
