Kalpa is why the Kinnaur exit should not be a midnight arrival. After Kaza the air thickens, the trees return, and a night here is the contrast that makes Spiti make sense.
If the itinerary only fuels in Kalpa, you have not visited. Walk, sleep, look at the massif if the cloud lifts.
