Self-guided with Hardev Motors still starts in Vashisht. You get a Himalayan that was prepared for mountain work, a briefing that names the fuel pumps that are rumours, and a phone number that is a workshop, not a call centre. What you do not get is a lead rider to follow. That is the point, and the risk.
Plenty of operators use “self-guided” to mean a bike, a handshake, and silence. We use it to mean you ride your own line on a motorcycle we still stand behind. The Enfield comes from the same yard as the guided fleet. If a cable is wrong, it is wrong fifty metres from a mechanic, not at Keylong on a machine nobody has seen since last monsoon.
A self-guided motorcycle tour is for riders who already know how Indian mountain traffic works, or who have done a guided week with us and want the second trip without a convoy. It is not a way to save money so a first-timer can “figure out Rohtang.” Rohtang, Baralacha, and Kunzum do not grade on a curve.
We will ask where you plan to go. If the answer is a Classic 350 to Padum, we will say no. If the answer is a Kullu valley loop and a night in Naggar, the rental is honest. If the answer is Manali to Leh in three days, we will tell you that is a transfer, not a tour, and that altitude does not care about your leave calendar.
Support is available as an add-on, not as a hidden line. Some self-guided guests still want a backup vehicle for luggage. Some want only the bike and a spare tube. We quote what you asked for. We do not quietly strip the guided product and keep the guided price.
Permits, rooms, and fuel remain your job unless you hire us to arrange them. That is the other half of self-guided: independence with a motorcycle that was not pulled from a tourist row on Mall Road.
You set the clock. You also own the puncture at dusk. Carry tubes, a pump, and the humility to stop when weather sits on a pass. Self-guided is not an excuse to skip layers or water.
We brief the current road, not last year’s video. Atal Tunnel, Rohtang when it is open, the Chandra valley, the turn at Gramphu for Spiti — these change after every slide. Listen in the yard. Then ride the briefing, not the Instagram save.
Valley self-guided riding is possible most of the year from Manali. High passes still belong to summer. We will rent you a Himalayan in January. We will not pretend it is a Leh expedition. Winter self-guided guests who want desert or coast should be talking about Rajasthan dates, not Vashisht frost.

Yes, if the route is honest and both of you ride. We still brief you as a pair. Splitting up on Baralacha is how self-guided stories end badly.
Bring a device you trust. We provide a briefing and a paper sense of the road. Do not outsource the Himalaya to a single phone with 12 percent battery.
Call the number we give you. We will tell you the nearest honest help. A full recovery is not a taxi button. High roads take time.
