Keylong is the Lahaul town that still feels like Himachal before the high road commits. On a Manali to Leh motorcycle tour it is often the last ordinary meal and the first thin air.
Jispa and Darcha sit further on. Keylong is where you still have a street, a workshop rumour, and a chance to sleep before Baralacha La.
We do not treat it as a place to race through so the pass can be a sunset photograph. Altitude is already in play.
Arrival is usually via the Atal Tunnel and the Chandra valley. Departure is the climb toward Baralacha or a Spiti turn at Gramphu depending on the tour.
Summer, when Lahaul is open. Winter Keylong is a different trip.
